Peak hour chaos as red-light train derails

10 Feb, 2012 06:52 AM

A train driver has been suspended after a Tangara train in his command partly derailed yesterday causing chaos for peak-hour travellers.

The derailment occurred just before 5pm between Hurstville and Penshurst stations.

About 150 passengers were evacuated and trains on the Illawarra, Eastern Suburbs and South Coast lines were delayed for up to an hour, while buses replaced trains on the Eastern Suburbs line.

RailCorp said that initial findings ''indicate driver error''.

The driver appears to have passed through a red signal, activating safety devices, which in turn caused the front four wheels to come off the track.

It said the driver and guard both returned negative alcohol tests.
