 $19m for camel cull

$19m for camel cull

03 Jul, 2009 10:40 AM
THE Federal Government will spend $19 million to cull camels in northern and western Australia as part of a $400 million package of environmental grants.

The culling program will be undertaken by the Desert Knowledge Co-operative Research Centre.

It will require helicopters to shoot the animals in more remote parts of Central Australia.

Camels are regarded as one of Australia's worst feral pests.

They cause $14 million damage to infrastructure and a number of road deaths, through collisions, each year.

Camels also adversely affect native species by trampling habitats and blocking sparse watering holes in the desert.

All the Federal Government can come up with is kill, kill, kill. Haven't they got any innovative thinkers in this Labour Government?

A camel cull will only reduce the population but doesn't solve the problem. Just a quick fix is easier by throwing millions of dollars at a shooters group to keep them happy, rather than finding permanent solutions.

The answer is sterilisation.

Culling camels is not good ideas. It is a waste of $400 milion dollars, it's inhuman action in 2009, and it will take a long time, four years, to cull camels in all Australia.

I can get all the camles in two years, saving $400m of our money at hard time like this. We can create new jobs for unemployed workers.
