How to pump up glyphosate performance

23 Jun, 2009 10:27 AM
Glyphosate works better when ammonium sulfate is added to the spray tank at rates of 8.5 to 17 pounds for every 100 gallons of spray solution.

But many premixed water-conditioning adjuvants in the United States are delivering half or less of the minimum recommended AMS, warns Mark Bernards, University of Nebraska Extension weed specialist.

"Many of these adjuvants don't have enough AMS to consistently improve weed control," Mr Bernards said.

"In many cases, performance is no better than glyphosate alone."

In a recent Nebraska trial, some actually reduced control – lending to the rise in glyphosate resistance.

The top-performing adjuvants in this study were the ones that delivered the minimum recommended volume of AMS.

The relationship between control and high AMS content has shown up in numerous land-grant field trials.

"Ammonium sulfate reduces the antagonism that can occur when glyphosate ions bind to mineral ions in hard water," Mr Bernards said.

"If you add enough ammonium sulfate to the spray tank, then the glyphosate ions will bind to the ammonium ions instead of the hard water minerals."

ED, what's this medieval weights & measures lingo? We have been metric for half a century. Those ounces and US gallons work out to be a simple 1-2 kg per 100 litres! No wonder the Yanks missed Mars with their Mars Lander.

RB, "convertworld" puts 15 US pounds/100 US gallons at 1kg to 67litres.

Sorry Motty you stuffed up and used UK gallons. There is a difference, no wonder sensible people converted to metrics years ago!

You're right GH, 15 US pounds to 100 US gallons is 1 Kg to 55.66 litres. Mea culpa. Maybe that's why the editor didn't venture into such murky waters himself.
