Abbott's plan a climate 'con job' or great news for farmers?

Abbott's plan a climate 'con job' or great news for farmers?

02 Feb, 2010 03:28 PM
CLIMATE Change Minister Penny Wong has accused Opposition Leader Tony Abbott of conducting a "misleading and dishonest scare campaign" with his climate change policy announced today, but the National Farmers' Federation have backed the Coalition's ideas.

The NFF admitted many questions remained about the policy details and how it would be implemented, but farmers would be buoyed by the recognition of the positive role that they can play in reducing greenhouse gas concentrations and storing carbon.

"The NFF is encouraged that that the Coalition has committed to an incentive based scheme for farmers to drive abatement from their sector," NFF president David Crombie said.

"In addition, we are comforted by the Coalition’s commitment to no additional indirect costs to energy and energy related farm inputs, which can have a major impact on the profitability of our businesses and regional communities.

"The Coalition is also right to acknowledge the need to consider potential impacts on agriculture, ecosystems and water in providing incentives for forestry under their climate change policy.

"This is particularly the case as global food and fibre security continues to escalate as a major concern all over the world."

But the NFF wants clarification on any Coalition plans in support of additional research and development (R&D) in forming their agriculture carbon policy, saying more investment was needed.

Meanwhile, Senator Wong said Mr Abbott had continually claimed that the Government's Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme would "increase Australian families’ bills by $1100 a year".

"As the Government has made clear on more than 10 occasions now, this figure is just plain wrong," she said.

"The figure of $1100 is almost double the actual impact and completely ignores the comprehensive cash assistance the Government will provide to nine out of 10 Australian households."

Sen. Wong said Treasury modelling found the Government’s Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme would cause prices to rise by 1.1pc in 2013 – on average costing a household $624 a year.

She said that under the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme, more than 90pc of all households would receive assistance of around $660 of assistance in 2013.

The Coalition policy is like trying to put out a bushfire with buckets of water. The demand for energy is increasing exponentially and the proposed band aids are insufficient to meet the demand. Only coal can produce the gigantic quantities we need. As Australians we should be working on the cleaning the coal technology which can be achieved at a marginal cost and the technology for it exists.

Jim you are right. Only coal can produce the quantities of energy we need IF you ignore nuclear. Wrong; carbon sequestration from CO2 emmisions is very far from a proven commercial reality and may never be practical on a global basis. It is predicted that it alone will require about 30% more energy to operate and will result in very large cost inceases. The effluent from seqestration is also not exactly environmentally friendly. Australia produces about 1.7% of the world's CO2 emmisions, and this relative amount will decrease significantly as China and India crank up. So we are getting our knickers in a twist about reducing 5% of 1.7% which at most will contribute to about 0.08% reduction in anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Now the science regarding the contribution of CO2 to global warming is itself far from settled (unless you want to blindly believe all of the pre-conceived stuff coming from the IPCC) In this context, why is the Rudd Government acting as if the future of our planet depends on their ETS policy, which has no guarantee of even reducing our minor contributions of CO2?

Wong is wrong again - most economists are saying it will cost anything from 2500 to 4500 per family per year. The government does not give anything away for free, and it still won't reduce global warming "if it exists". It will just get the K Dud a spot on the world government in the near future. Do your job Rudd, you were put in place to serve the people not your own personal benefit.

Kevin Rudd's great big new tax climate change policy will even cost more with then Abbott's plan because there will be that many Australian people thrown out of work as most over taxed business will move offshore, people receiving unemployment benefits will increase tenfold with a Rudd Labor Government that has no answers.

9/10 households. Penny let me guess where the 1/10 that will miss out will be from. If Australia is serious about this then it is our dependence on electricity that must change. Abbott is on the right track - there is so many little things we can all do to reduce how much electricity we use. Let's start there.

I disagree with Jim and beesblair. Coal isn't the only option; what about natural gas? It abounds Victoria, is cleaner and doesn't require the billions of dollars in research investment to become cleaner. Instead the money could be spent piping it around the place to current coal stations and retrofit them to run on gas. Perhaps this is a little too common sense. Then in the meantime perhaps nuclear can be brought on line.

The Labor government proposes a tax be applied to the heavy polluters, like power stations. The power stations will then pass on this tax to consumers, in the form of increased power costs. Industries consuming electricity will then pass on the increased costs of making their products to consumers. The government is then going to cash reimburse 9 out of 10 households for the increased costs to them, caused by the tax. Pardon me, but where then does the deterrent lie to being a heavy polluter. The power station is not deterred, as it passes on all its costs, knowing the household is not going to complain because it will be reimbursed by Kevin R. Industry will not complain because it will pass on its costs to the consumer, knowing that the consumer will again be reimbursed. So then ... all this reimbursement that will come from the government raises the obvious question ... where does the government get this money from? Answer more taxes. This sounds like the mother of all schemes to me and all this to save us contributing 0.01% of world CO2 emissions. Give me a break.... Peter

Damn good point Sam. It was interesting with the solar electricity rebate version 1. The governemnt seriously underestimated how keen the Australian public was to take up this challenge to reduce their requirement on coal fed electricity. the scheme was so heavily subscribed that the government paniced and shut it down overnight to replace it with version 2 which lessen their commitment. Why can't we look at putting our 'smart' science into looking at ways of reducing our energy requirements by looking at more efficient energy consumption and production. Why can't Australia be the world leader in this area???

Penny Wong is the guilty one who is pursuing the biggest "misleading and dishonest scare campaign" ever perpetuated on a nation. The Rudd government scare campaign is purely to bring in new taxes - to help fund the ridiculous spending spree they went on. The best way to bring in new taxes is to bring the majority of the population to such a degree of fear, they will vote for anything proposed. Hitler did that once - where's the difference? Bush justified going into Iraq with the fear of "Weapons of Mass Destruction".
