Cheers for Abbott's property rights pledge

02 Feb, 2010 05:39 PM
TODAY'S farm rally erupted with a deafening cheer when Opposition leader, Tony Abbott, made a surprise address to the thousands of farmers protesting at the front of parliament house.

Mr Abbott ran to the rally from his press conference where he unveiled the Opposition's new climate change policy and was greeted with loud cheers and clapping as he promised to always respect farmers.

With Minister for Agriculture, Tony Burke, and Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, both declining invitations to attend today's rally, Mr Abbott said he believed it was the first duty of Government "to respond to its citizens".

"And it wouldn't matter what the Prime Minister thought, or what the Minister for Agriculture thought about the issues you are raising, they owe it to you to give you a fair hearing," Mr Abbott said.

"It is a sad day in this country when a couple of thousand farmers and country people can make the effort to come to Canberra and not get a fair hearing from a single government minister.

"Shame on the Rudd Government."

Mr Abbott said while he would not always agree with what farmers were calling for, he would always respect them "because an Australia without a farming community would not be Australia".

"I want to say I think a couple of people have gone a little bit too far and I do not support self harm or threats of self harm," Mr Abbott said of the 52-day hunger strike by Peter Spencer.

"But I do support ending injustice and I think it is only right and proper that the people of Australia should campaign to end injustice where they see it and they should be heard.

"As the Federal Opposition leader I can't fix all the terrible things that State Governments of different political persuasions have done…

"…but I can tell you this – that as long as there is breath in my body I will do my damndest to ensure that no political party that I am associated with takes away people's rights without compensation.

"I am so pleased to see so many of you here. I think it is very important that the decent ordinary people of our country claim it back."

Well done Mr Abbott! Mr Rudd & co are not interested in anyone other than themselves. It's about time they got on with the job that they were elected to do which was supposed to be running the COUNTRY not the bloody planet. It's time they got on with the job of fixing the fixable in Australia...how in the hell does he think he is going to fix the planet...does he think he is God! His believers are dropping off the bandwagon quick smart.

Little Kevi Runt and Burko have delt themselves out of the debate.

Tony Abbott has cleverly used political rhetoric to sway votes his way. "…but I can tell you this – that as long as there is breath in my body I will do my damndest to ensure that no political party that I am associated with takes away people's rights without compensation" - what rubbish. Look at the Northern Territory Intervention enacted by the Howard Government of which Abbott was a member - that government took away the proprietary rights of indigenous Australians living in the NT without compensation. And I can think of several other examples!

A step in the right direction Tony Abbott but I'm not holding my breath till I hear you say you will look at the issues retrospectively. Otherwise, all he is guaranteeing is future legislation. We need the current wrongs to be addressed. Unfortunately what will probably happen when he is in power, he will refuse to look at the property rights issue retrospectively and there will be no money for landowners out of pocket from the land clearing and other laws.

Rhetoric is good Mr Abbott but how about a promise of compensation instead of blaming other governments for what the previous federal government, that you were a member of, was the main driver? "Show me the money", then I will believe!

Amanda, even the Aboriginal people and their leaders supported this move. We could no longer stand by and see the abuse of these children any longer - what about their rights? Now please name the several other examples.

Of course, farmers are smart enough to see through such platitudes. He doesn't seem to be actually committing any support for the farmers' property rights cause. He's only stating he supports 'ending injustice' for the people of Australia, and supports their right to protest.

How can Rudd & Burke state "we have no idea what the farmers are so upset about" if NFF has been inside the big house lobbying for change to these issues? Someone is telling porkies? One guess who.

Amanda one more example is that the Libs got into bed with Labor and undemocratically voted to destroy our wheat export National Pool which has directly cost growers between one & two billion dollars. Abbott's words of assurance are already proven to be BS!!!!!!!!! He can still regain support if he as leader backs real Australians and not big bussiness like KRudd and Wrong.
