Heavy rain from two systems hits Qld and WA

23/07/2008 1:35:00 PM
Two weather systems dominate the country's east and west, bringing heavy rain to most of Queensland and to the south west of Western Australia.

According to The Weather Company, cloud is blanketing Queensland due to an infeed of tropical moisture, generating widespread rain north of Brisbane.

It reports that a thick cloudband is also moving over southwest WA, with a front causing heavy showers.

But in southern Australia, low cloud over southern Victoria and Tasmania is only bringing light showers.

The Bureau of Meteorology has put a strong wind warning in place for most of the Queensland coast.

It expects the wet weather to persist for the rest of today and most of Thursday, bringing more good rain to agricultural areas before clearing to the east.

In the 24 hours to 9am Wednesday, the Bureau recorded the following totals: Croydon 11mm, Julia Creek 8mm, Mt Sophia 32mm, Atherton 14mm, Richmond 15mm, Hughendon 32mm, Gregory Springs 60mm, Einasleigh 54mm, Ingham 20mm, Innisfail 32mm, South Johnstone 31mm, Tully 67mm, Collinsville 34mm, Mackay 32mm, Charters Towers 32mm, Alpha 12mm, Clermont 11mm, Tambo 13mm, Aramac 188, Barcaldine 19mm, Blackall 23mm, Longreach 19mm, Muttaburra 29mm, Winton 15mm, Rockhampton 15mm, Biggenden 13mm, and today Roma has received 6mm.

In WA the Bureau has a gale warning in place for coastal waters Mandurah to Israelite Bay.

It expects showers in the south west of the State and

along the Lower West coast to slowly spread, with isolated thunderstorms in the Lower West and SW districts.
