Ilfracombe girl sworn in as Governor General

Quentin Bryce has been sworn in as Australia's 25th Governor General at a special ceremony and reception in Canberra this morning.

The former Queensland Governor spent her childhood at Ilfracombe, in Western Queensland, and was appointed to the position earlier this year by the Queen on the recommendation of Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd.

She is the first woman to be appointed to the position.

Her Excellency said today that Australia's rural and remote places were "forever deep in my heart".

She said she would serve Australia with solmenity, impartiality and integrity.

"Australians, you have entrusted a great deal in me and I will honour your trust," she said.
