Lyne by-election: Independents stick together

3/09/2008 2:27:00 PM
It is said independent politicians cannot form their own political party, for obvious reasons, but that does not stop them showing allegiences to each other.

A testament to this is the by-election for the Federal seat of Lyne, located on the NSW Mid-North Coast, to be held this Saturday.

Independent candidate Rob Oakeshott is the favourite to win and federal New England independent Tony Windsor will drive 270km to hand out how-to-vote cards for Mr Oakeshott.

"I'd be surprised if he loses," Mr Windsor said of his mate, who he has nicknamed "Buckshot".

"I was there a couple of weeks ago and the mood was pretty good."

Mr Windsor hit back at criticism of independents, saying the Snowy Hydro Scheme was saved from being sold off because of independents who started a "groundswell" of public support.
