Outlook '10: What the people thought

06 Mar, 2010 03:00 AM
THIS year's ABARE Outlook conference, held in Canberra, met organiser expectations and delegates found it a useful source for up-to-date information on the sector globally and nationally.

With attendance numbers on par with last year, organisers were particularly proud to have Murilo Portugal from the International Monetary Fund address the economic overview session on day one.

Other speakers included representatives from CSIRO, universities, New Zealand's Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, and McDonalds Australia among many others.

This public servant junket and subsequent back-patting really gets up my nose. Why doesn’t the Productivity Commission do a job on this lot? I have never seen any of the soothsaying in this forum come to an accurate outcome, let alone serve any productive purpose. If the money that was utterly wasted here is given to drought affected farmers it will at least help them keep producing a quality and reliable food supply for Australia.

Couldn't agree more, "What the". I have never known ABARE to give an accurate report of the situation of agriculture in 35 years of farming. The most notable effect of these self-indulgent talk fests is to set prices for markets. Note the time of year it is held and how it affects the price of all produce for the rest of the year. The buyers of Australian produce must love it when "Outlook" is held - it takes the pressure & uncertainty of marketing off them. No wonder we are price takers - the laughing stock of the world!
