A sprinkling of rain yesterday has taunted grain growers across the southern wheatbelt, but there are forecasts of big falls for the coming week.
The best of the rain fell in South Australia, where Minlaton received 7mm, Renmark 5mm, Clare 3mm, Port Augusta 5mm, Snowtown 8mm, Coles Pt 3mm, Neptune Island 12mm, Whyalla 8mm, Arkaroola 18mm, and Yunta 19mm.
But over the border in Victoria Mildura received just 3mm.
In NSW, the rain was confined to the extremities with fall of about 30mm along the metropolitan Newcastle-Sydney-Wollongong coast, while in the far west Broken Hill received an excellent drenching of 58mm, while Menindee received just 4mm, White Cliffs 7mm, Tibooburra 5mm, and Fowlers Gap 18mm.
According to The Weather Company, which provides up-to-the-minute forecasts and mapping on FarmOnline, the cloud is being driven onto the southern and central NSW coast by a Tasman low.
Cloud is also forming today again over southern SA and western NSW near an upper trough, causing some thundery showers.
And while the falls so far have been limited and patchy, the forecast from the United States Center for Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Studies (COLA) is for a strong chance of high rainfall throughout the NSW, Victoria and SA cropping belts in the next week.
