Quarantine cuts face Senate roadblock

22 May, 2009 11:11 AM
A government bid to shift the cost of quarantine inspection charges to exporters could be tripped up in the Senate, according to The Australian Financial Review today.

An article says the coalition and minor parties have expressed concerns that the government has been using quarantine cuts as just one way to cut funding during the economic crisis.

The move to scrap an export subsidy from July was the only key recommendation by the government-commissioned Beale review of biosecurity to be adopted in the budget.

The review's recommendation for major funding increases was ignored.

In the budget, the government has scrapped the 40 per cent subsidy for quarantine inspections and certification. Exporters will be asked to pick up the full cost.
