In light of the close election and the power the Nationals now has to define the future for regional WA, the Western Australian Farmers Federation is urges the party to remain independent and focused on rural and regional issues for WA.
WAFarmers president Mike Norton said Australian farmers have faced a series of unfavourable government policies for well more than a decade and, as a result, Australia has seen a decline in farmer numbers, agricultural sustainability and production.
"Rural and regional WA have suffered enormously at the hands of previous governments, and of late via the 'one vote, one value', and similar city-centric policies, concerning health, rural infrastructure, education, police and a lack of funding for research and development for WA’s agriculture," he said.
WAFarmers believes key political players need to establish policies which address the long-term sustainability and viability of regional WA.
"Rural and regional WA needs strong State policy to promote wealth and support fair competition, not policies driven by large corporate empires which keep WA farmers on subsistent levels of farm income," Mr Norton said.
"The establishment of these empowering agricultural policies will ensure the longevity of the agricultural industry and provide much needed support for regional small business and family communities."
