 Abbott clarifies CSG mining comments

Abbott clarifies CSG mining comments

27 Jan, 2012 09:05 AM
OPPOSITION Leader Tony Abbott yesterday insisted that he supported farmers' desire to protect their land after earlier saying that coal seam gas extraction was not as "devastating" to the countryside as open-cut mining.

Mr Abbott, who had previously sided with farmers opposing expansion of the gas industry on their land, said on Wednesday that some farmers welcomed it and it was not as disruptive to the land as mining, The Australian Financial Review reports.

The comments triggered a backlash from independent rural MPs Tony Windsor and Bob Katter, who accused Mr Abbott of not understanding the gas extraction process.

Mr Abbott, while visiting Tamworth in northern NSW on Wednesday, said during an ABC interview that there was a big difference between coal seam gas extraction and open-cut mining. "Open-cut mining is a devastating thing. Coal seam gas extraction, by contrast, involves relatively little disturbance of the surface, a relatively modest area for the plant itself, some roads and fences," he said.

He said there were legitimate concerns about the impact on the water table but some farmers were happy for gas extraction to occur because it often led to road upgrades as part of the process.

What a tragedy that, at a time of great need for leaders to head off an environmental disaster about to be caused by CSG extraction we are stuck with this. I guess it's all our fault for not making sure we send sensible people to Canberra

After listening to Tony Abbott's two recent radio interviews (Alan Jones & ABC local radio), it is clear that the CSG mining lobbyists have been in his ear. After initially seemingly supporting the farmer, and the idea of clean water and overall food security, he has now back-flipped in support of this hideous CSG industry. The only way to send these politicians a message is via the polling booth - starting with the upcoming QLD state election - and if that vote meant a vote for Katter or the Greens, then so be it.

There's a better way Rob. Change the leader of the federal coalition. I am sure I don't need to tell you who would be suitable!

Tony unfortunately has again attempted to say what he thinks his audience wants to hear.

His problem is that his contradictory comments have been heard by both audiences.

Political opportunism is his forte and will probably be his undoing.

He will try and pass this off as a misunderstanding or lack of detailed knowledge. Like his comments on human induced climate volatility and high speed internet, Tony has again adapted his position to suit his audience.

Eventually the decision has to be made about which side of the debate he wishes to support.

Tony Abbott's mouth is a problem...from it comes contradictory, annoying, illogical, ill-thought out comments on a range of matters - he appears to be more interested in sheer politics. Libs need a change, a solid smart change. How much longer do we have to listen to Tony apologising, reframing, repeating and then withdrawing? Libs must be , well, embarrassed. Time to move on and get a new leader. Libs are not invincible at the next election and if they want an effective majority, Tony must go.

Mining/CSG being exempt from compliance with COAG Agreements on Water Reform and the National Water Initiative says it all about ALL the political parties and the decision-making politicians

Every individual has a so called impact. The likes of Bob Brown and Bob Carr are up with the best. They jet around like rock stars.CSG is no worse on mother nature, then say,Blacktown or Tamworth.People are more concerned about there privacy been disrupted then anything. They should be fully compensated at land value and inconvenience money.I would not vote for a Green if they were the last ones standing on the planet.
