Clearing compensation claim a furphy, say greenies

01 Feb, 2010 04:47 PM
GREEN lobby group, Total Environment Centre, has described farmers' claim for compensation for loss of property rights incurred under land clearing bans, as a furphy and says it should be ignored by governments.

The powerful NSW-based lobby group has vowed to fight "all the way" against any push by farmers for land clearing bans to be eased.

It claims farmers have already received millions of dollars and have continued clearing rights over a lot of native vegetation.

"There’s been extensive clearing and we have to keep the best of what’s left but some farmers have never accepted that the wider community has a right to impose laws to prevent excessive land clearing of native vegetation," TEC director Jeff Angel said in a statement to the media this afternoon.

"Their claim for compensation is a furphy as they deliberately avoid the truth that compensation has already been paid both financially and in the structure of the laws.

"In the case of the NSW laws the then Howard government provided tens of millions of dollars on the condition that NSW had land clearing laws.

"More was put in by the state.

"Similarly in Queensland there was a large adjustment fund.

"And both laws contain protections for clearing by farmers of native vegetation including regrowth, other than that deemed important for biodiversity."

Mr Angel said Opposition Leader Tony Abbot would have to be clear on his policy position.

"On the one hand he expresses sympathy for the farmers; while on the other he wants to plant lots of trees for carbon sinks," Mr Angel said.

"If you free up land clearing laws then the carbon emissions will overwhelm the potential carbon sequestration of tree planting."

Gee you guys make me laugh!!!!!! What would the city grennies know about anything out here? If the general community wants to stop land clearing then they can buy the land and do what they want with it - can't see how it's possibly fair that the greenies expect us to incur the financial loss to make them happy. Get real and get a life.

NSW is not the whole country, I know this may suprise the greens. No one in WA has got anything. I'm not even allowed to sell fire wood off it. No reduction in rates or help to fence off what has become the people's park. If this happened in a city there would be a huge out-cry.

If anything should be ignored by governments, it should be the blatherings and total falsehoods coming out of the mouth of Jeff Angel. Methinks he has smoked too much of those funny tomato leaves and it has addled his brain. Why does the media bother to give him any moments in the sunshine at all?

So Jeff Angel you would be prepared to accept a pay packet of one third of what it is now forever (and that includes after retirement) in exchange for a pitiful holiday bonus. When you and all the other greenies with their heads in the clouds will take that, we will accept that what has happened to us as a result of land clearing laws is acceptable. Get out of your air conditioned office and see the impact on some farmers. The problem is you look only at the big picture and will not look at individual cases... just like the senior bureaucrats and politicians.

Why is it that you never hear a word about developers who knock down every tree in sight to build more houses for over polluting city dwellers and their air cons and cars? Okay for the mining giants to decimate the country side without a word said. Always been easier to pick on the hard working individual, disgusting.

When I see Jeff Angel standing in front of bulldozers and protesting about the wholesale environmental destruction caused by urban development I might acknowledge that he has some credibility. In the meantime, like all greens, he's just a monumental hypocrite.

Just been reading the Native Vegetation Act...maybe they should do the same. The money that is available to farmers is so they can put up fences, plant trees etc...no compensation payouts. Once again, a green lobby group that doesn't do their research.

Everyone has a right to a say, it is just that farmers don't have a right to be anything more than a peasent. Farmers need to have a right be able to make a living from farming. I am sure that if the greenie was only paid for 2 hours work, he would demand compensation and the government to help him stay alive.

Starve him then see how good his so called green credentials are.
