Climate doubt begins to grow in Labor Party

Climate doubt begins to grow in Labor Party

16 Mar, 2010 12:02 PM
IT SEEMS not just the Opposition is home to climate sceptics, with the chairman of a Government committee investigating ways to help farmers adapt to climate change admitting he is unsure of the science surrounding global warming.

Tasmanian Labor backbencher, Dick Adams, chairs the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Primary Industries and Resources which this week released a report called "Farming the Future", recommending ways the Government can assist Australian farmers adapt to the impacts of climate change.

In his forward to the report, Mr Adams said he has noticed climate conditions have become "unsettled" in the later part of his life.

But he sounds unconvinced that this is necessarily a result of global warming.

"I do not know enough about the science to say that global warming is occurring, but I do feel that the climate is changing on an irregular basis and there are many reasons for it to do so," Mr Adams said.

"There are some natural reasons for climate change and there are the activities of man and the animals with whom we share the earth."

Mr Adams' comments are at odds, though, with the stated Labor Government position on climate change and global warming.

The executive summary in the Government's white paper on its Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme says carbon pollution is causing the world's climate to change, resulting in extreme weather, higher temperatures, more droughts and rising sea levels.

Perhaps Dick is more "unsettled" by the fanatic “religious doctrinal diatribe” associated with the climate change lobby.

What sort of fool is Dick Adams? Information on global warming has been available in readily accessable forms over the last 20 years, the topic politically hot over the last four years. it is inexcusable for an Australian politician, particularly one with primary industry duties to not 'know enough about the science' of global warming. We rely on these people to get themselves informed so that they can make sensible decisions about our and our childrens future.

It's actually a sign of intelligence to admit when you don't know something and to seek information. Jacob (1:44) calls Adams a fool but Adams has already demonstrated he is more rational than the fervent worriers and catastrophists. But what info, if you believe CSIRO today you'd think we're in the grip of catastrophic warming raging at 0.7oC since the 60s, but this announcement conveniently didn't mention the decades of cooling that preceded the 60s which effectively wipes that 0.7oC away. (Go check the data). With wilful disinformation like that around, Adams is right to admit he is "unsure". Good on him.

Oh dear Jacob, your stupid comment about Dick Adams shows that the only fool might be you. Dick Adams is simple saying that he is not fooled by the koolaid mob and has a brain of his own and wont be dictated what to think just because he is in the labor party. Nothing foolish about that. Are you seriously suggesting that the so called crap that passes as science that is daily shoved down our throat is correct? If you do look in the mirror to find a bigger fool than Dick Adams.

Why is it when someone makes it known that they are not a "True Believer", they are called fools, illogical, illiterate or at best, semi-literate, intellectually-challenged, redraggers, ratbags, frightened and inward-thinking people. What are these extremists frighted of? Obviously they are scared of an open debate.

HERETIC! HERETIC! Burn him at the stake! I'm not sure which is the worst crime. Questioning climate change, or displaying independent thought in the Labor Party.

Jacob You posed the question: What sort of a fool is Dick Adams? It would appear that he is a great deal wiser than yourself and thus not the fool you would like him to be. It is the multiplicity of well known facts the GW scaremongers choose to ignore that reveals their assertions are more science fiction than science fact. Their GW fiction has already driven the price of goods & services beyond the affordability of many consumers & the Emmission Trading Scam hasn't even got of the ground yet.

Good on you Dick for not towing the party line. Obviously you have an intelligent mind and don't just blindly accept all the political and manipulated scientific hype about climate change. There should be more like you in politics.

Jacob - He is no bigger fool than you. He is admitting what a lot of us believe and that is there is insufficient hard evidence to say yes or no. Climate is a pattern measured and recorded over thousands of years. Reliable data has not been recorded that long.

Good on Dick Adams for displaying some independence and not simply towing the party line. Labor needs more logical thinkers to speak out against the religious zealots who have taken over the party.
