Senator, Cattle Council want each other fired

25 Feb, 2010 06:31 AM
BILL HEFFERNAN wants the Cattle Council sacked. The Cattle Council wants him sacked. A row over beef imports from countries that have had mad cow disease is driving a wedge between farmers, politicians and rural lobby groups.

The beef industry was scrambling yesterday to quell fears that the removal of import restrictions on Monday from countries including the US, Canada and Britain could lead to, for instance, contaminated meat pies.

Both opponents and supporters of the removal of restrictions said there was negligible chance for the disease, also known as BSE, to enter the country. Instead, the issue is being framed as a sell-out of Australian trade interests.

The decision to permit beef imports, particularly from the US and Canada, has riled some farmers who fear it will endanger the country's reputation for strict quarantine standards, putting at risk exports to lucrative Japanese and Korean markets.

''This is the biggest ambush of agriculture and betrayal of Australian consumers that I can remember,'' Senator Heffernan said. He said the Cattle Council, which supports the government's decision, should be sacked for not representing the interests of farmers.

The Cattle Council president, Greg Brown, said the senator deserved the same fate. ''I have never seen such blatant populism in all my life.''

The opposition agriculture spokesman, John Cobb, said US and Canadian producers were the winners. They could tell Japanese and Korean customers that even Australia, with its strict protocols, was happy with their product.

John Cobb, in only 19 words you have rightly stated what most level headed Australians think. We need people of your thinking to put Australia first and stop importing product that is readily available having been produced in this country. The worst example being Kingaroy peanut silo complex virtually silent and Chinese peanuts in shell on Woolworth's shelves in Queensland

No doctors, no fruit growers, no manufacturers, no dairy farmers and now these twits are playing with the future of the beef industry.

Are their Abattoirs Approved by AQIS the same as USDA does to Australian Abattoirs, EU Listings, Malaysian Listings etc. Do they have traceability systems and costs like the NLIS system we had to have to keep export markets open? Do they use the Aus-Meat language to describe product that Australian Producers invested in? I don't think so! All our QA Systems we have invested in now seems to be the greatest con of all time! Its about $$$ not Quality!

What are the vested interests in wanting these import restrictions lifted. Where are the benefits to Australians.

Where would we be without people like Bill Heffernan working for rural Australia, asking the hard questions? Keep it up Bill.

Bill, why don't we ask Japan and Korea at their highest level of government. right now, what their opinion is with this australian government backdoor decision? You might already have done this. I reckon I know what they will say. Food for thought.

What an idiotic stance by Greg Brown and the CC. Can't see how they can fairly and reasonably represent cattlemen when they do things like this. We'll just have to put 'em down the chute with the rest of the offal and rejects.

John Cobb suggests that by accepting meat from BSE countries Australia is saying, we are happy with their product. Well on the basis of that principle, Australia sends a very clear message that we are happy with the cruel and brutal treatment of our animals in the Middle East because we send them there.

Who are the faceless people who really rule the cattle coucil? Are they importers, proccessors, politicians or just plain idiots? If we begin to import some things have to GO. All levies and charges, MLA, NLIS, cattle council, AQIS just to name a few. STICK IT TO'EM BILL
