'Tell me to go': Joyce challenges Liberals

02 Nov, 2009 05:32 AM
TENSIONS between Barnaby Joyce and his Liberal critics appear to be coming to a head, with the Nationals Senate leader challenging them to get the "appropriate person" to say he should leave the Coalition.

Senator Joyce said it seemed from anonymous sources that "the cause of the discontent in the Liberal Party about the Coalition revolves around me".

It would be a "bad outcome" if the federal Coalition split or the merged Liberal National Party in Queensland fell apart, he said. The only way to lance the boil was for his critics, if they could, to get someone to say he should leave the Coalition.

Senator Joyce's challenge is exposing deep tensions within the Coalition, which some Liberals fear could soon be at risk, adding further to Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull's serious troubles.

Senator Joyce said he would step aside if the "proper people" in the Liberal Party said he should. He did not name Mr Turnbull but he was obviously referring to him as the "appropriate person".

The high profile of Senator Joyce and other militant Nationals, especially over emissions trading, has unsettled and angered many rural and regional Liberals, who feel under political pressure.

One long-time critic of the Nationals, backbencher Alby Schultz, from NSW, said Senator Joyce should not just talk about leaving the Coalition, but do so.

Mr Schultz said Senator Joyce would not be missed. He would be followed by a "small gaggle of geese" in the Senate, but he did not have much support among House of Representative Nationals.

Mr Schultz said many Liberals believed the Nationals should walk out of the Coalition on a permanent basis.

The best thing Barnaby Joyce could do for this country is urge his party members to get behind him & challenge Labor & the Libs head on in an election. No country in the world is governed in the best national interests of its public when it is dictated to by a one party system masquerading as two. With Rudd & his mob aided & abetted by Turnbull & his mob, a one party system is what we've got. Australians must come to grips with the fact that with the collective private & public sector debt racing towards two trillion dollars we are not the so-called wealthy nation that Gore, Suzuki et al falsely alleged & thus cannot afford to subsidise India & the former Soviet States adopted by the EU. Subsidising badly governed countries is what the the global warming rort is all about & anyone who doubts that hasn't read the script.

Since when has Alby Schultz been spokesman for the Liberal Party on the state of the Coalition? Best be listening to your constituents Alby - the best people to go would be you and your good buddies Heffernan and Tuckey, all three traitors to the farmers.

Stick in there Barnaby - they are just scared as at least you will have someone following and will stick by you. Keep fighting - us kids are right behind you.

Barnaby, you must stand your ground as you are the only one that has the guts to stand up and speak you own mind, and support your constituents.

"Small gaggle of geese", hey Shultz? Have you ever noticed how geese are gutsy feathered little friends - well known for putting the "cunning fox" off, and making it turn and run with its fluffy little tail between its legs. RUN SHULTZ RUN! You and Malcolm Turnbull should run - your time is done! You are now known as traitors to Australian people - you have sold us out - it;s over!

Go Barnaby - you have the rural Liberals in a tither - they know that they are well and truly 'on the nose'.

For 20 years the leaders of the Nationals put blind loyalty to the Liberals above representation of their constituency. They called it solidarity, and believed that this was the only alternative to losing office. Those 20 years just about wiped out agriculture in Australia. A gaggle of geese grows with good leadership.

Hey! - reality check for you "staunch Nationals". If you think Barnaby's policy position will sway the 5% of the voting population who decide who will govern you are W-R-O-N-G... wrong! The people who will decide the outcome of the next election live in middle-class suburbia - the land of the swinging voter, not where you and I live, nor in safe Labor seats. For heaven's sakes grow up and become more politically savvy or become a chapter in the political history books of this country - Barnaby needs to learn to appeal to the more moderate constituents and you need to allow him to, otherwise he will be out of a job. Win the election with the Liberals first, then stand up for your policies against a Labor opposition. If you don't "cool it" a bit, Labor will govern for several more terms like it did in the '70s and '80s.

Barnaby is one of the very few who when asked a question actually answers it. A good decent country person with integrity and a good grip on reality. We need more like him, but I don't think they're around, certainly not in parliament.
