SA dairy project forages for success

16/07/2008 10:55:00 AM
A project which gives dairy farmers the skills to run more profitable farms by increasing their use of home-grown forage, has been acknowledged as a leader in dairy training.

The FORAGE Skill$ program, run by Dairy Australia's regional development program DairySA, recently took out a FarmBis Award for Dairy Training.

Project leader Kirstie Murphy said industry expertise was a crucial part of developing the project.

"Industry guidance, support and input have made this project the success it is," she said.

"We worked closely with Dairy Australia to see what has worked in other regions and adapted it to our situation in South Australia."

Ms Murphy said the project had earned universally positive feedback from the more than 140 farmers involved so far.

"The skills these farmers have gained will be of ongoing value to an industry that is constantly applying a wider range of knowledge to the task of creating better farm businesses," she said.

The awards celebrated South Australia's training excellence by acknowledging the achievements of rural trainers in helping producers build productive businesses and manage risk.

Laura Fell, FarmBis State Planning Group chair, said the Forage Skill$ program was recognised for the quality of its resources and approach in supporting participants to apply what they are learning on farm.
