Australians 'uncomfortable' with GM foods: survey

05 Feb, 2010 01:14 PM
AUSTRALIANS remain very uncomfortable about eating genetically manipulated (GM) foods despite government and GM industry claims of growing acceptance.

Swinburne University's fifth National Science and Technology Monitor has found most people well informed about GM but mistrustful of the institutions that commercialise GM foods.

Swinburne's survey asked 1000 respondents how comfortable the were with GM plants for food and the latest average score was 3.9 on a scale of 10 where zero is 'not at all comfortable'.

Gene Ethics director Bob Phelps said a lot of the mistrust came from the public's perception of Monsanto, which owns more than 90 per cent of commercial GM soy, corn, canola and cotton lines.

"Monsanto's management and shareholders should be ashamed of ranking absolutely last among the 541 trans-national companies assessed by the annual Geneva-based Covalence reputation index," he said.

Covalence's Ethical Quote score and rankings reflect the historical evolution of the positive and negative aspects of each of the 541 multinational companies' ethical reputations.

I dont find any comment from chris tong or paula fitzgerald about the wonderful public perception of gm on this comment site? Lets face it, as time goes by, more and more consumers just dont buy into the industry hype... GM food is a dud- environmentally, financially for the farmers and socially due to grave health concerns. Farmers who blindly accept this un/ mis-tested technology are going to ruin it for the rest of us. Farmers are in a business- start listening to your customers!!!!!

It's time for people power. If we all take the step and buy organic as much as possible or boycott anything containing canola, soy, cottonseed oil and all other possible gm contaminated foods, the big boys will have to take notice. Just shows that the Indians have greater brainpower and guts to kick out Monsanto than our politicians. They're too busy bowing down to big business (big money!) instead of taking care of the most precious, priceless Australian commodity of all - OUR HEALTH.

Aren't the politicians supposed to be in power to serve the people not the other way around? I am all for organic natural foods which improves our health - a form of preventative medicine. Unfortunately we are never told the full truth about GM foods BUT why mess with nature? When we mess with nature, nature messes with us!!!!!!!!
