Register of GM-free farms launched

09 Jun, 2009 01:43 PM
Anti genetic modification lobby group Gene Ethics has launched a new national register of GM-free goods, services and locations.

Gene Ethics director Bob Phelps, says the interactive register is designed to be a public service, "particularly to help shoppers find and support GM-free products and services".

"The enterprises on the google map are committed to excluding anything made using Genetic Manipulation techniques from their products, services and facilities.

"GM products may include GM soy or corn imported mainly to feed animals, or Australian GM canola or cottonseed products.

"The growing number of local government areas with GM-free policies are also listed.

"We also note that most of Australia remains GM-free, including Tasmania, South Australia, the ACT and the Northern territory.

"The few GM canola growers, far outnumbered by the supporters of GM-free, will also be shown on the map."

Mr Phelps claimed canola contamination from farms growing GM crops poses unacceptable hazards to public health, the environment and markets.

Well done Bob Phelps. I will be looking forward to seeing more farms on the site. The more people know about the choice they are given the more likely they are to choose GM-free.

This is great news for the majority of Australian consumers who would not choose GM food if they had a choice. Unfortunately the biotech companies have and are working hard at eliminating that choice. The move by Graincorp to mix non-GM and GM canola, the lack of appropriate and transparent labeling, the bulldozing of public wishes and rights by governments (such as the GM 'trials' in WA, and the lifting of moratoriums in other blindly led states) all show a sorry state of affairs. Thankfully gene ethics, network of concerned farmers, madge and many other groups and individuals are helping to create a groundswell of people that will debunk the corporate lies and propaganda and bring about a healthy, long-lasting future without the massive threats that GM crops pose. Thanks to grassroots efforts like this GM-free register, the corporate goliath giants have less chance to wreak the havoc that they would have if left unheeded. Power to the people!! It's been done before throughout history, and it is being done now!

Great news! Congratulations to Bob Phelps, he is tireless in his quest to free us from GMOS. This map is a very handy reference.

Thanks Bob, this is going to build into a fantastic resource for all of those that want to access food that they can trust. Gene Ethics is doing the Federal Government's job of keeping the consumer informed.
