WA harvest underway

3/10/2008 6:34:00 PM
WA's 2008 grain harvest has begun in the far north of the wheatbelt.

WA's major grain storage, handling and marketing company, the CBH Group, received its first delivery on Thursday - 30 tonnes of canola at the Northampton receival point.

CBH Geraldton zone manager Duncan Gray said the volume of grain coming into the system would remain minimal over the next two weeks but would build steadily from then on.

More receival points were likely to open soon, including Yuna and Binnu which remained closed in 2007 due to the poor season in the area.

CBH general manager operations Colin Tutt said the start of the harvest followed a rollercoaster season for WA growers.

In April prospects were for a well above average harvest but then the rain dried up in August, with some people suggesting the harvest could be as low as 7.5 million tonnes.

The CBH Group upgraded its forecast for the harvest by one million tonnes last week to a range of 10 to 12 million tonnes.

However it remains cautious due to anticipated losses caused by frost.

"We revised our harvest forecast after the extensive and very timely rains over much of the wheatbelt last week," Mr Tutt said.

"However, the impact of the frost on some individual growers unfortunately appears to be quite severe as reports escalate."

The first delivery was of high quality canola with good oil content.

"We hope that it's a sign of things to come and a good quality WA harvest," Mr Tutt said.

Mr Tutt said it's also an exciting day as it's the first load received under the new logistics co-ordination system, Grain Express.
