WEA accredits three more wheat exporters

23 Oct, 2008 08:16 PM
Wheat Exports Australia (WEA) has accredited another three companies today to export bulk wheat.

The additional companies accredited for export are:

• Emerald Group Australia Pty Ltd

• Bunge Agribusiness Australia Pty Ltd

• Queensland Cotton Corporation Pty Ltd

These companies bring the total number of companies accredited for export to 19.

Newly appointed chief executive officer of WEA, Peter Woods, says WEA will continue to assess new applications as they are received, and review existing accredited companies.

"This is the first time in more than 60 years Australian wheat growers have been able to choose to whom they sell their grain, based on the best deal," he said.

The Wheat Export Accreditation Scheme under the Wheat Export Marketing Act 2008 came into effect on July 1, with the aim of providing similar benefits offered by deregulation of the domestic wheat market in 1989.

WEA says it does not indemnify exporters or provide guarantees relating to growers contracts or payments of any kind - the sale and marketing of wheat remains the responsibility of the grower.

Further details on companies accredited for export, and conditions of accreditation, can be viewed on WEA’s online Register of Accredited Exports at www.wea.gov.au.

Growers have already lost around $100 a tonne from the loss of the National Pool. Are these new players going to boost our returns to compensate us from our government forced loss? I doubt it. The Rudd Labor Government needs now to access just how much compensation funds they will need to set aside from what surplus they have left. On a 15 million tonne harvest $1 billion should cover our losses.

Has the Land newspaper stopped printing the same tired letters? The desk is dead. We wouldn't be getting an extra $100 if the national pool was still here. Stop flogging a dead horse.

It was interesting to read Malcolm Bartholomaeus's column in The Land this week. Being the enlightened intellectual deregulation supporter that he is, his commentary has basically condemned the outcome for wheat growers in the new deregulated environment as all "us stupid farmers" said it would. Thanks a bunch for your support Malcolm, helping destroy an institution that the majority of growers always wanted to keep..

Pray tell us all how multiple traders can extract better prices out of end users whether domestic or export to pass back to growers?
