Birregurra, Vic, weaner heifer sale lifts after slow start

07 Jan, 2009 10:06 PM
The gusto of the previous day’s Victorian weaner sales dropped off at the opening of the Birregurra, Vic, heifer sale on Tuesday.

But in later sales, all classes of heifer weaners sold dearer, ranging from 165-175c/kg, and the lighter weights making a fraction more.

Agents opened the market with joined heifers and after reaching an initial $900/head prices quickly fell back to $800 on the consecutive three pens.

Joined heifers topped at $1020 and Peter McConachie, from Charles Stewart agents, was surprised at the lack of enthusiasm on the joined heifers, given their “pretty handy quality” and said that a lot only made meat value.

After stalling through the opening pens, however, agents then picked up the pace of the sale with the beginning of the weaners.

Mr McConachie said processors and feedlotters put a floor in the market, forcing local restockers to dig deeper to secure suitable lines to join for next year.

“The main forces on the day came from the meat trade, with buyers very strong on selected lines of heifers,” Mr McConachie said.
