Born after the implementation of the Canadian feed rule banning animal matter in feed, the discovery was made through the Canadian BSE surveillance program.

According to a statement from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), an investigation is underway.

The farm of birth has been identified and other animals from the farm are being traced and possible sources of the infection are being explored.

CFIA says this case is consistent with other cases found in Canada. Officials in the past have said that animals with BSE will continue to be found as they work to fully eradicate the disease.

CFIA says no part of the animal entered the human or animal food chain.
