Roma cattle influx: 11,500 head

Such a huge yarding, 11,500 head, could have been expected to test eastern Australia's benchmark Roma, Qld, store cattle market on Tuesday.

Instead, prices lifted for most types, with weaner steers up 5c/kg, to a top of 228c/kg.

The sale included some good quality lines of cattle, which helped push the Roma store cattle index to 109.5 points, up 3pc on last week's:

• Steers in the 400-550kg range topped at 198c/kg and averaged 180 (+2).

• Steers in the 350-400kg range reached 198c/kg and averaged 178 (-5c).

• Steers in the 280-350kg range topped at 208c/kg and averaged 182 (+0).

• Weaner steers in the 220-280kg range reached 218c/kg and averaged 194c/kg (+4c).

• Steers under 220kg topped at 228c/kg and averaged 201c/kg (+9c).

The Kingston family, Warrabinda, Roma, sold 486kg Hereford cross steers for 191c/kg or $930/head. Trevor and Jenny York, Hyde Park, Wallumbilla, sold 477kg Simmental steers for 194c/kg or $926/head.

The heifer market was fully firm with those in the 350-450kg range topping at 181c/kg and averaging 166 (+1) while heifers in the 280-350kg range reached 190c/kg and averaged 169c/kg (+5). Heifers in the 220-280kg range topped at 190c/kg and averaged 172 (+0) while weaner heifers under 220kg topped at 194c/kg and averaged 174 (+0).

Cows in the 400-500kg range topped at 170c/kg and averaged 155c/kg (+11) while cows in the 300-400kg range reached 140c/kg and averaged 122c/kg (-3). Cows and calves sold to $760/unit.

The AA Co offloaded more than 800 Santa cows from several western Queensland properties.

The best of the AA Co offering was a line of 162 Santa cows from, Brunette Downs, Mount Isa. Averaging 426kg, the cows topped at 154c/kg to average 142c/kg or $605/head.

11/12/2008 | Farm lobby groups will decide next week whether the future of farm representation will stay as it is or be broadened to bring in the big end of town.
