Young lambs start appearing in saleyards

17/08/2008 4:00:00 AM
So far for August 2008 young lambs have accounted for 18pc of national lamb throughput at markets covered by MLA's National Livestock Reporting Service.

MLA says half have been offered at NSW physical markets, with Victoria accounting for 35pc and SA 11pc.

As is expected for this time of year, very few have been penned in WA or Tasmania.

But when compared with the same period last year, MLA says young lamb supply has doubled.

This is partly a result of the improved start to the lambing season.

Even though there are reports of young lambs weighing less than anticipated, 56pc have been over 18kg (carcase weight).

This is highlighted when compared with the corresponding time last year when 77pc of young lambs were over 18kg.

MLA reports that also having an impact on current young lamb yardings is the improved prices.

Young trade lambs are currently 87¢/kg or 23pc higher than last year at 453¢/kg (cwt).

Heavy young lambs are 33pc above last year, at 463¢/kg.
