One of the biggest crowds in recent years has turned out to support the Australian Hand Cane Cutting Championships held at Dalbeg, North Queensland, on the weekend.
Organisers estimate between 500 and 600 people attended the Sunday event at Paul and Shirley Donnelly's farm at Dalbeg.
After a lapse last year through lack of interest, the competition came back with a bang in 2008.
Competitors came from as far as Tully in the north and Marlborough in the south came to see if they still had what it takes to mow through row after row of burnt cane.
The competition consisted of various heats in categories including an under 35 years section, a 35-55 years section, and an over 55 section.
The place getters in each of these then went into the final.
Former winner Peter Donnelly, Mackay, took out the title this year, with Jeff Bradshaw, Mackay, coming in second and Paul Donnelly, Dalbeg, in third.
