A new plant DNA mapping tool has been released specifically for the sugar cane industry.
Diversity Arrays Technology (DArT) is a mapping tool widely used by plant breeders of wheat and barley.
But the Cooperative Research Centre for Sugar Industry Innovation through Biotechnology and Diversity Arrays Technology Pty Ltd have now joined forces to deliver the new tool for cane plant breeding.
Due to the complex genome of sugarcane, breeders across the globe have been hindered in their application of molecular marker systems for rapid genetic improvement of sugarcane.
But BSES QCanes manager and co-leader of the BSES-CSIRO Sugarcane Improvement joint venture, Dr Ross Gilmour, said his research team was ready to adopt DArT as part of its efforts to provide the cane industry with a more innovative breeding program.
