$2 wine a 'recipe for disaster'

3/07/2008 4:20:00 PM
Queensland community groups have labelled as "dangerous" a promotion by a major liquor retailer offering bottles of wine for just $2 each.

Liquor chain Dan Murphy's today launched a nationwide sale of cleanskin Shiraz and Chardonnay at a fraction of the cost of a standard drop for the second consecutive year.

However, the Salvation Army has voiced concerns the cut price plonk promotes a "drink more for cheap" mentality, and could spark a rush for an exorbitant alcohol fix among Australians.

"People may drink this alcohol as fast as they buy it," Manager of the Salvation Army's Drug and Alcohol Research Centre Graham Tamsett said.

"And that's dangerous."

Chardonnay and Shiraz will be on sale for $1.99 bottle at 80 stores across the country. And for the price of a reputable label drop, the retailer is also offering a half dozen deal for $23.88.

"There are no figures on the social impact of these sorts of sales, although in my opinion it can't be doing anything good for people with alcohol problems in this country," Mr Tamsett said.

"Alcoholics will get drink no matter what the cost...but this only makes it easier."

However, Dan Murphy's national merchandise manager Steve Donohue vehemently denied the retailer promoted binge drinking.

"We strictly comply to the responsible service of alcohol...at the end of the day it is upon individual's to drink in moderation," Mr Donohue said.

"We offer customers the opportunity to buy products at reasonable prices and expect that customers consume those products responsibly."

The bargain drop will be sold at seven Dan Murphy's stores in Brisbane until stocks run out.
