Ex-Tropical Cyclone Grant was downgraded to a tropical low Monday afternoon but has had its largest impact in terms of rainfall, dumping nearly 400mm during the past 24 hours.
Parts of the Darwin Daly district, especially in the southern reaches near Katherine have seen some of the heaviest falls associated with this cyclonic system. The same areas had seen nearly 24 hours of constant rain and storms. An area from Katherine to Douglas River and east to Pine Creek have seen an area of 300+ millimetres of rain during the past 24 hours. Edith Falls amassed 385mm and Upper Seventeen Mile Creek 311mm, their heaviest rain in at least eight years.
Severe flooding occurred in the Katherine area, which led to a train derailment and roads and bridges being washed out.
Heavy rain continues to fall in Arnhem Land, where more than 400mm has fallen in the past week.
The remnants of the Ex-Tropical Cyclone Grant continue to dump heavy rain across the southern Daly and Roper districts as it drifts very slowly southeast. The system is forecast to slowly turn the east and drift over the Gulf of Carpentaria by Wednesday night and possibly re-intensify into a cyclone again during Thursday. This will cause rain to ease to isolated showers and storms over the Top End.
