Belittle them and they will come

Belittle them and they will come

Mount Isa Mayor John Molony has had the last laugh.

In August, Cr Molony spent days fending off the world's press over comments that "beauty disadvantaged women" would be welcome in Mount Isa.

Since then, Cr Molony has received more than 50 letters and emails from lonely women from as far afield as the Philippines, South Africa, Spain and the United States.

"I just read about the mayor and his ugly duckling invitation," a woman from the United States wrote.

"I don't think I am an ugly ducking but I am intrigued about your city. If I wanted to come to Mount Isa, how would I go about it?"

Another wrote: "There are some women in this world that are smart enough to know they are not great beauties on the outside, but finer than fine on the inside.

"So how do we go about applying for interesting gentlemen in Mount Isa that are interested in a smart, older, nice looking and sincere woman?"

Cr Molony said he had passed on the resumes of several women to the surrounding mining companies.

"These girls aren't dills, they're professional people," he said.

"My intent was to draw attention to the imbalance and focus on attracting more women to Mount Isa. I believe I'm in the process of doing that."

The mayor said he was surprised he made headlines around the world for his comments.

"I've always found with media stories that get a lot of attention if you wait until the headlines subside, you'll get the true public response," he said.
