Birdsville parties on

07 Sep, 2010 01:14 PM
THE bakery may be low on bread and the meat supply may be dwindling, but at least the pub still has beer.

That was the sentiment of the thousands of race-goers stuck in Birdsville yesterday as flood water continued to cut roads in and out of the region.

With roads only opening today, the tourists were settling in and enjoying the party atmosphere.

Cricket, karaoke and a bus-pulling competition have been just some of the activities keeping people amused.

Birdsville Hotel manager Brian Hanna said the party-goers in town were not in danger of running out of alcohol just yet.

"We ordered in 50 tonnes and I'd say 80 per cent of it is gone already," he said.

"But less people came to the races than last year, so even though they're here for longer, there is still stacks and stacks left."

At the bakery Adrian Miller said if yeast did not arrive today, it could get difficult to service the 3000 people in Birdsville.

"We're nearly out of yeast which means we won't be able to make bread," he said.

"We've got a bit left at the moment but we're not a production line and can only make 16 loaves at a time so it's walking out of the door."

He said staff were working 12 to 14 hour shifts and were run off their feet.

Yesterday the Birdsville to Bedourie road was closed to all vehicles with more than a metre of water at the Carcoory Crossing 85 kilometres from Birdsville.

The road from Bedourie to Boulia was also closed because of more than a metre of water at Bellevue Plains.

The Birdsville to Windorah road had two boggy patches and water was at 0.65 of a metre at noon.

Four-wheel-drives were allowed to drive to Big Red for the first time since the rain on Friday, after the roads opened at midday.

The Birdsville Track and Simpson Desert roads beyond Big Red were also closed.

Birdsville Police officer in charge Senior Constable Neale McShane said he hoped roads would be open today.

"We're all in the same boat, we're all stuck here and would love to see the roads open on Tuesday but reality is it may be Wednesday," he said.

The Birdsville Race Club confirmed the racing of the Birdsville Cup would not be going ahead, despite indications earlier on the weekend that it could be run some time this week.
