Cane toad a delicacy in China

04 Feb, 2010 12:31 PM
'ONE man's trash is another man's treasure'. According to an article in Anthill magazine, Charleville meat processor John Burey is planning a trip to Beijing soon to determine the viability of exporting cane toads to China.

The article states that the Chinese have been using cane toads as an ingredient in traditional medicines for generations. The toad toxin is used in a wide range of treatments, from skin remedies to heart stimulation to alleviating toothache.

And cane toad meat is also a delicacy in some regions of China. It is estimated there are 200 million cane toads in Australia and their poisonous venom stored throughout their bodies has been known to kill snakes and crocodiles and can cause temporary blindness and severe pain in people.
