CSR appeals sugar split ruling

CSR has appealed against a Federal Court ruling that blocked the company’s plans to spin off its sugar business.

According to The Australian Financial Review, CSR said Wednesday that a ruling that the split plan would make it harder to pay compensation to asbestos victims contained “errors in law which may have potentially significant ramifications for the future strategy of the company”.

Deprived of the revenue from CSR’s sugar business, the building materials operations might struggle to pay compensation to asbestos victims, the judge, Margaret Stone, said last week, ruling the demerger was contrary to “commercial morality”.

The company said yesterday it “accepts that it must appropriately address the concerns of stakeholders with a relevant interest in the asbestos issue’’.
