Darwin's driest start to February in 21 years

17 Feb, 2010 06:29 AM
DARWIN is having its driest start to February in 21 years with only 73mm falling in the first 15 days of the month, 290mm short of the monthly average.

This dry start to February comes only a few weeks after its wettest start to the wet season in 13 years, so one could say the season is now tending towards average.

Since the beginning of December, Darwin has accumulated 1080mm, only about 50mm more than the three-monthly wet season average.

This is not likely to be the driest February on record with a reasonably good prospect of showers and storms during the next seven days. The driest February was in 1959 when only 103mm fell.

A trough just south of the Top End is edging north which will cause an increase in showers and storms for the Darwin area in the next few days.
