 Deluge continues across state

Deluge continues across state

19 Feb, 2010 06:17 AM
THE same system that caused heavy downpours in Sydney last week has delivered heavy falls to QLD.

The heavy falls have triggered a number of flood warnings throughout the state as rivers swell downstream of the heavy falls. Localised flash flooding has also occurred.

Bowen has been the bulls-eye of the recent falls with 232mm in 24 hours, their heaviest falls in 3 years. This brings Bowen's two day total to 323mm, an accumulation last seen 19 years ago.

Brigalow received 109mm, the highest recorded rainfall in seven years, while Sandy Cape saw 100mm, the heaviest in two years. Hamilton Island received 95mm, their heaviest rain since February last year.

The heavy rain in northern QLD has followed heavy falls in Brisbane on Tuesday, and Sydney on Friday and Saturday.

The rain has been brought by the one trough that has extended from the north of Australia to the southeast, before contracting into QLD.

The deep trough has allowed moisture to continually feed into the system, fuelling the heavy falls. The trough will continue to move further north over the coming days.
