RIVERS are running throughout the North West.
Some crossings have already gone over on the Flinders and the Landsborough highways, prompting the RACQ to issue a warning yesterday to motorists travelling during the wet season.
RACQ spokesperson Jim Kershaw said people should plan their journey ahead of time.
"Check beforehand that you can make it through before you leave for your holiday," he said.
"If there are trouble spots sometimes you can plan to go around them and plan your journey accordingly."
He said those who had not travelled in the wet season before should be prepared.
"When there's a lot of water on the road, less experienced drivers should travel in a convoy or hold off their trip for a couple of days," he said.
"You should also pack supplies just in case the road gets cut and you have to stay where you are for a few days."
Mr Kershaw said above all, people should never attempt to cross floodwaters.
"If it's flowing quickly don't go across it," he said.
"You should never go through it because you don't know how dangerous it will be and in fast flowing water you could die."
He said if the water was not running it was best to assess the depth of water, by walking through it, before crossing it.
Queensland Fire and Rescue Service area director John Bolger said it was a busy wet season for the Mount Isa team last year.
"We did a lot of rescues during the wet that could have been avoided if motorists didn't cross road closed signs," he said.
"We'd urge people to take care on the roads and don't attempt to cross floodwaters."
Two people drowned in Mount Isa during last year's wet season.
