Free legal support for the bush

12 Mar, 2009 04:09 PM
Outback and regional residents in need of legal support but unable to afford a solicitor's bill may be eligible for free legal services thanks to a commitment from the Queensland Public Interest Law Clearing House Incorporated (QPILCH).

The QPILCH has recommenced its Rural Regional Remote (RRR) project that aims to provide pro bono legal services to those unable to pay due to some form of hardship.

The project, which commenced in October 2004 for three months and was reinstated in January this year for six months, was established when research into pro bono activity found that many private practices were prepared to offer free services, but didn't have the capacity or manpower to provide such a service.

QPILCH will step in to help firms willing to offer by pro bono services by handling applications and gathering research, thus reducing the amount of work placed on a firm.

RRR coordinator Aimee McVeigh was in Townsville last week securing the services of local firm Lee Turnbull & Co, saying it is better to have a local firm handling local issues.

"The service is available to any eligible, disadvantaged person who is otherwise unable to obtain legal aid," Ms McVeigh said.

"(The project) assists with any civil matter - so not a family or criminal matter - such as community organisation tax advice, anti-discrimination matter, employment matter or personal injury."

QPILCH evaluates each application on its legal merits and its chance of success, before forwarding it to a firm closest to the applicant's home address.

l Further details and application forms are available via www.qpilch.org.au.
