An emergency drop of essential food supplies to the isolated community of Burketown departed Mount Isa this morning.
The roads leading to Burketown have been cut off for the past week due to heavy rainfall and rising flood waters in the area.
Two flights carrying the supplies departed from Mount Isa at 9am and 11am today.
They were to deliver a total of 1300 kilograms of essential food items to supply food sellers in Burketown.
Mount Isa Acting Superintendent Ray Pringle said the drop off consisted of supplies that would normally be delivered by road.
Supt Pringle said plans were also being finalised for an emergency drop of about 580 kilograms of food supplies to Doomadgee on Thursday.
He said Bedourie, Birdsville and Boulia may also need similar assistance in the coming weeks.
"We're sensing they may need resupply down there but we'll take our advice from the local disaster management groups in terms of what type of support they need," he said.
Supt Pringle said the police were following long-established wet season operating procedures.
