I've got no beef: Heatley

6/10/2008 7:02:00 PM
Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) chairman Don Heatley says he hopes antagonism from the Australian Beef Association stops – but he is not holding his breath.

The association attempted to put forward a motion of no confidence in Mr Heatley but was not able to be put at the annual meeting because it was defamatory.

"I'd hope any antagonism would dissipate, the reality of the situation is it seems to linger on," Mr Heatley said.

A probable pay rise will greet Mr Heatley if he makes it onto the board again after the November annual general meeting.

MLA's board will put forward a motion to increase its total salary cap for directors, excluding the managing director, by $250,000 to $750,000 at the annual meeting November 13.

If successful, directors' average annual pay will rise by $1,850 to $42,700 on January 1.

Two people other than Mr Heatley will put themselves forward for the board this year.

Sydney-based director Peter Boyden will attempt to be re-elected for a second term while Grant Burbidge, NSW, will try out for the board for the first time.

It is unfortunate that the ABA still doesn't get the message being continually delivered year after year that the majority of beef producers and indeed processors are not interested in their one-eyed views and in are fact totally sick of their continued running down of our industry. The message remains the same, get involved and put your views to the vote from within and stand your chances, stop eroding our great industry by this continual sniping from afar, this only serves to send the wrong messages to our markets and indeed our competitors must love it.........

Don't hold your breath Don. The enormous cost burdens that MLA forces upon Australia's livestock producers continues. NLIS, LPA and the 40% increase in the levy with no real increase in prices. Now we see a massive increase in MLA Directors renumeration at a time when farmers have had to borrow an extra 7 billion to keep operating. The MLA with their allies in Canberra are milking the cattle industry production sector for all it is worth.

Good on you Brad, never let the facts get in the way of your warped views. As ando says, start acting positively & stop running our terrific industry down.

dear Brad, i would hardly call a pay increase of $1850 a year a massive increase, in fact i am grateful we have such committed men and women doing a job that makes their annual stipend look very cheap to me. If you are having trouble making ends meet at the current levels of cattle prices could i suggest you spend a lot more time in your business and a lot less time trying to stuff ours?.......
