NQ student on song for the Vatican

05 Sep, 2010 04:00 AM
NORTH Queensland local, Klancie Keough, is set to join a team of staff and students from Australian Catholic University (ACU) when they perform a concert in Rome on the eve of Mary MacKillop's canonisation.

Invited to participate by the Sisters of St Joseph, the 24-member team from all six ACU campuses will give audiences a snapshot of Mary's life through drama and song.

The ACU Choir will also join the Vatican Choir for the Mary MacKillop canonisation mass in St Peter's Basilica on October 17.

Klancie, from Abingdon Downs Station north of Georgetown, is completing a bachelor of education at the university's Brisbane campus and will be singing in the performance.

"I'm really looking forward to the trip to Rome. It will be my first time in Europe, and to go for such a special occasion will be a fantastic experience," she said.

"I didn't know a lot about Mary MacKillop besides what I had learned in school, but I guess coming from the bush it was inspiring to learn about all the work she did in remote areas, and I've come to understand what a strong and amazing woman she really was."

Klancie, who went to boarding school in Townsville, was also a 2006 Australian Idol finalist.

Dr Tracey Sanders, senior drama lecturer at ACU and part of the creative team travelling to Rome, said Mary MacKillop was an ordinary woman who did extraordinary things.

"I've attended Josephite schools since I was four-years old, and watched the slow but steady progress of Mary MacKillop's canonisation," she said.

Personally, going to Rome will be not only a wonderful moment of seeing someone I've admired finally become a saint, but an opportunity to give the Sisters of St Joseph as much as we can in terms of honouring Mary MacKillop.

"The performance is a snapshot.

"It takes moments from the archival historical documents that the sisters gave me, and puts those moments dramatically on stage to tell the highs and lows of Mary MacKillop's life."

Andrew Beiers, Brisbane campus minister and member of the creative team, said the performance was a celebration of Mary MacKillop's life.
