ACTING NT Chief Minister, Delia Lawrie, has commended police, emergency service workers and volunteers in Alice Springs and Central Australia on their efforts during the recent floods.
Visiting Alice Springs and meeting with volunteers who have helped out during the recent floods, Ms Lawrie, congratulated emergency service workers on their efforts.
"Alice Springs and communities across Central Australia have pulled together and responded in the way we would expect from Territorians," Ms Lawrie said.
"The ongoing efforts by emergency service personnel and community members helping people affected by the floods is to be commended."
Ms Lawrie also extended her condolences to the family and community affected by the tragedy in the Utopia region where two men were swept away by floodwaters.
"Our thoughts are with those who are mourning following the tragic events in the region over the past few days."
Ms Lawrie said Territory Government had notified the Commonwealth the floods in Central Australia were an event under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery arrangements.
This puts in place arrangements for the NT to receive reimbursement from the Commonwealth for repairs and maintenance to flood-affected public infrastructure including roads.
"Arrangements are in place to help those in communities cut off by the flood waters in central Australia," Ms Lawrie said.
"We will continue to work with police and local government to support these communities."
Police are coordinating food drops to isolated outstations and several aged and frail people have been evacuated from Soapy Bore into Alparra.
Road crews are continuing to inspect and work on roads affected by the floods. A number of roads in the region remain closed and are being opened when it is safe to do so.
