Nth Queenslanders gear up for Oak Park Races

06 Feb, 2012 04:00 AM
FOR more than 80 years North Queenslanders have headed out to Oak Park for famous Oak Par Races and they will be doing so again this year.

To ensure it is truly a family event, organisers have put the dates back a week to July 6-7 so they fall within the school holidays.

But while the focal point of the event is the horse racing on Friday and Saturday, the celebrations begin on the Wednesday before, when the hundreds of campers will be cheering on the Mighty Maroons in the third State of Origin match.

On the Thursday night you can don your finery and attend a formal ball while on Friday night you can dare to wear anything that turns you on at a fancy dress ball.

Days and evenings are filled with heaps of entertainment for the kids.

It is expected that more than 2000 people will be turning up, with many of them camping for the five days.

Prizemoney for the horse races will be decided at the next committee meeting and will be published in the North Queensland Register.
