PRA rejects WWF's land clearing claims

8/09/2008 2:37:00 PM
Property Rights Australia says it will take legal action to prevent any attempt by the World Wildlife Fund to bring further land clearing restrictions on rural property holders.

PRA says the farming community was "hounded and stood over" by the Howard and Beattie governments.

"The whole vegetation management is a blot on the history of this country," PRA chairman John Purcell said.

"Land, both private and freehold land and state leasehold land, have been closed down and taken out of production with nil compensation.

"This is no more than theft and taking away framers' ability to maintain or increase their income."

PRA has also rejected WWF's suggestion that regrowth vegetation treatment should be banned.

"This is simply disallowing very necessary maintenance to land that has been previously developed at great costs," Mr Purcell said.

"No other business sector would stand for this treatment. Nor will the farming community this time around."

We largely have a right to choose our own fates, but our biodiversity, our ecology, is a framework that supports all life. Destroying it for individual livelihoods and profits is adding to the annihilation of humans and other species. Who ever said the country belongs to humans who aren't even "native" to Australia? Too much has been taken out of our land for profits overseas, and the result is environmental devestation. Destroying our biodiversity is the destruction of Nature that supports all lives.
