THE Queensland section of the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) has launched a fleet of dedicated aircraft used to deliver primary health care services to North Queensland communities.
The fleet consists of two new Cessna Grand Caravans C208s and one Beechcraft King Air B200 that will be used to transport RFDS Cairns Base primary health care staff to remote communities, granting locals access to vital RFDS health services, services they may otherwise go without.
CEO RFDS (Queensland Section), Nino Di Marco, said the fleet means better health outcomes for Queenslanders.
"Simply put, a dedicated fleet of aircraft designed to carry staff, rather than patients, means more seats enabling us to transport more staff with a varying range of expertise," Mr Di Marco said.
"These staff will deliver a wider range of health services, increasing the number of patients we treat," he said.
The fleet will be based in Cairns, the busiest RFDS base in Australia.
In the 82 years that the RFDS has been providing health services to Australians there has not been a dedicated fleet to carry out primary health care work.
RFDS aircraft were mostly used for emergency evacuations or inter-hospital transfers, with only some primary health care work involved.
"It is our mission to provide excellence in aeromedical and primary health care across Australia," he said.
"Having a dedicated fleet also achieves a key objective - to have our own aircraft, with our pilots, flying our doctors, nurses and allied health professionals, as a fully integrated service model," Mr Di Marco said.
Aircraft were purchased with funds donated to the RFDS.
The Cessna Grand Caravan C208s were purchased last year with a total cost US $4 million.
The Beechcraft King Air was purchased in 1991, and was previously used for emergency evacuations and inter-hospital transfers and has a replacement cost of $7 million.
