Save the Aramac hospital

2/10/2008 2:59:00 PM
The Aramac community has vowed to vehemently oppose any attempts to close its local hospital.

"The community response to the Qld State Government’s intention to close the hospital has unified this community as never before," the coordinator of Save Aramac Hospital Committee (SAHC) Gary Peoples said on Tuesday.

"People of political persuasions, local business people, the Barcaldine Regional Council and Aramac residents have joined together in their determination to make the State Government see sense by forming SAHC within the auspices of the Aramac Community Development Association.

"Premier Anna Bligh has asked the people of Queensland to comment on her public relations exercise, Q2, and making Queensland smarter.

"How is taking health services out of western communities like Aramac creating a healthier Queensland?"

Mr Peoples said the Barcaldine Regional Council was following through on a former Aramac Council initiative to build a state-of-the-art doctor's surgery to help Queensland Health attract a doctor to Aramac.

However, at the same time Qld Health was planning to close the town's hospital.

He said that the numbers the State Government have quoted to support their closure action are false.

"The health minister, Stephen Robertson, has distorted the figures because of bad management by Queensland Health pertaining to recruitment and retention of staff," Mr Peoples said.

"Naturally figures are down if a hospital cannot admit acute patients without a doctor.

"SAHC and the whole Barcaldine Regional Council will not accept anything less than the retention of the Aramac Hospital – and the Aramac community and SAHC now ask Qld Health to allow us the opportunity to attract another doctor to Aramac, and to allow the community to help Queenland Health to solve any other issues they have with the Aramac Hospital."
