AS Olga gradually re-intensifies over the southern fringes of the Gulf of Carpentaria, she is delivering relentless rain to the tropics.
While the threat to Karumba has diminished, Olga is still predicted to reach category 2 status before making landfall somewhere between Karumba and Burketown while dumping deluges across the rural Queensland landscape (see rain map right).
With the clockwise rotation of the ex-tropical cyclone, moisture is not only being drawn into the system from the Gulf but also across the Queensland tropics from the Coral Sea.
Over northeast Queensland, Mingela saw another 124mm fall in the 24 hours to 9am. This brings them to 503mm for the month, an amount which has only been exceeded four times in 12 years of records.
In the last 24 hours to 9am many areas have also seen their heaviest rainfalls since February with amounts breaking 100mm. This includes:
- Innisfail with 149mm
- Ayr with 135mm
- Inkerman with 112mm
She is also spreading heavy rain and gusty winds over northwest QLD and the NT. Kingfisher Camp in the Gulf Country saw their heaviest rain in four years with 129mm.
In the NT wind gusts are picking up. Elcho Island saw a gust of 82km/h and Nhulunbuy saw gusts as high as 69km/h.
