Weaker La Nina hits peak

06 Feb, 2012 09:55 AM
THE La Nina climate pattern behind the latest floods in Queensland and northern NSW has reached its peak, the weather bureau says.

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology is expecting the climate pattern to fade finally some time in autumn, but the end is officially in sight.

After analysing the latest sea surface heights in the Pacific recorded by satellites, US space agency NASA also recently declared the La Nina effect was peaking, although it noted the pattern could still worsen.

The latest statement on the climate pattern from the BoM does not mention a peak, but noted climate models indicated the La Nina pattern would "gradually decline in strength over the coming months, suggesting a return to neutral conditions during the southern autumn".
