AUSTRALIAN Labor Party Mount Isa branch president Alvin Hava has announced he will contest the seat of Kennedy at next year’s Federal election.
His decision to stand as the Labor candidate was announced at yesterday’s ALP regional conference in the city.
It will be the first time in 50 years more than one person would be contesting the seat against the incumbent.
It is understood that Andrew Turnour, a businessman from Ingham, will also contest the seat.
Mr Hava said although he was relatively new to the party he was impressed with the current Federal Government and wanted to “do his bit” to ensure Kevin Rudd would still be Prime Minister after the next election.
“Australia is going through an exciting time, we are leading the world out of the economic downturn, we are seen as being a leader on the world stage and world leaders are using the policies of our government as a way in which they can resolve their difficulties,” he said.
“I feel so proud to be an Australian.
“It's common knowledge that Kennedy has suffered because of the lack of good solid representation. At a time when the Federal Government has allocated so many resources around the Commonwealth this area could have done a lot better.”
Mr Hava said his campaign would be innovative, surprising and exciting.
“I am young, energetic and have a solid background in the community sector and know that we have to fight the Coalition and the Independent on their ground and at their own game.
“I believe that we can harness those community minded people into a team of workers determined to win the seat of Kennedy back to the Labor fold.”
