RECORD nominations kept the trend intact for the start of the rodeo season in North Queensland when 450 nominations contested the ABCRA affiliated rodeo at Bartlett Park on the outskirts of Townsville last weekend.
Officials were very happy with the overall outcome of the rodeo as the record nominations saw the show finish at a reasonable time allowing most to party on, celebrating their results.
For some younger cowboys, such as Darcy Smith from Richmond, it was all about keeping his eye on the target and looking the part.
Darcy placed second in the dummy roping with this spectacular throw.
Event Director, Chris Wilcox, said the club had spent a lot of money in upgrading facilities for the sponsors.
“We believe they need to looked after and we have created a viewing area for them second to none,” Chris said.
“With talk of a recession, the sponsors have dug deep and supported this rodeo with record prize money.”
With 48 teams in the team roping, more than 500 cowboys and cowgirls took part in the rodeo.
Tegan Purse posted 3.19sec in the breakaway roping in the middle of the second round and had to watch 12 other cowgirls try to better her time.
The rider most likely Jemma Dowling who has just left the Junior ranks to the seniors was last out and went very close with some sideline judges believing she had bettered Purse’ time.
The timekeepers however came up with 3.25sec which left Dowling in second with road construction truck driver, Patea Goldenstein in third with 3.45sec.
Townsville cowboy, John Taylor, scored his second win in a row when he took out the open bull ride on the Glen Moss bull, Ajax.
The bull had two bucks and then went into a spin which ultimately the protection clowns had to stop and saw an elated Taylor jump to the ground and salute the crowd after his 87 point ride.
